Of late I have read some real opposition to macramé! ...yes macramé!
In some circles it is a dirty word.... maybe for some, an unfortunate experience with knotting in the seventies has marred them and they can't get past it.
Maybe Ouch boy in 20 years time will write
in his own blog "Ouch Boy tells all" how his childhood will be forever scarred by his mothers knotty adventures!
For some, these images cast a murky shadow over the current works of contemporary knotters amongst us!
They can't see this new interpretation, skill or passion, they just see what they see?
For me it's canned carrots, canned pea's and canned potatoes that have left their indelible mark on my childhood psyche!
Never a camping holiday in the eighties with them not coming along for the ride! eeerrrk!
but whatever it is or was please don't let it overshadow your appreciation of the knot!
Sailors love them...and we all love a good sea shanty!

Opposition to Macrame??? how bizarre..maybe they are haunted by the images of badly made macrame owls with glowing eyes glaring at them in their beds as children.

DeleteI have similar nightmares about Veg-All (a canned carrot/pea/green bean/lima bean/potato/corn/celery mix that my mother used to buy)...but macrame? Heavens, what retro lover could deny macrame its rightful place in home decor, especially when it's as beautiful as yours? The wonderful Mid2Mod-inspired hanger you sent me is front and center in my living room, and I couldn't be prouder of it! :)

ReplyDeleteOh, I remember the tie dye, we did it at school with rubber bands. The water was a deep purple and the finished product turned out yellow! And don't get me started on shell displays... We had an abundance of shells and glued them on top of matchboxes!! Mom and dad managed to look pleased, even after box number zillion...
I will! ....knots forever!

Hy Pippa, I love your Post. Macrame is a trip back to my childhood and a twenty something boy never ever could know macrame at his best. And your macrame is a complete new interpretation and it looks fab!

DeleteJust discovered you... love your macrame hangers!! And, who could hate knots? I personally was scarred by those apron/dresses that donned liquid dish soap containers...in which my mom would also stick a doll head on ;)
